Resources for the Future - RFF is a nonprofit and
nonpartisan think tank located in Washington, DC that
conducts independent research – rooted primarily in
economics and other social sciences – on environmental
and natural resource issues. Founded in 1952, RFF was created at
the recommendation of then-CBS Chairman William Paley, who had just chaired a
presidential commission that looked into whether the U.S. was becoming overly
dependent on foreign sources of important natural resources. Paley was one of
the first to recognize the importance of an organization devoted exclusively
to natural resource and environmental issues |
World Wildlife Fund (WWF) |
The
Nature Conservancy - Since 1951, The Nature Conservancy (TNC) has
been working with communities, businesses and individual people to protect
more than 98 million acres around the world. Its mission is to preserve the
plants, animals and natural communities that represent the diversity of life
on Earth by protecting the lands and waters they need to survive. Conservancy
members are approximately 1
million, and has started the
largest private conservation campaign ever undertaken: $1
billion
to save 200 of the world's Last Great Places. |
World
Resources Institute - World Resources Institute (WRI) is an independent
nonprofit organization with a staff of more than 100 scientists, economists,
policy experts, business analysts, statistical analysts, mapmakers, and
communicators. It is an environmental think tank that goes beyond
research to find practical ways to protect the earth and improve people's
lives. The World Resources Institute's mission is to move human society
to live in ways that protect Earth's environment and its capacity to provide
for the needs and aspirations of current and future generations |
IUCN -
Founded in 1948, the World Conservation Union brings together States,
government agencies and a diverse range of non-governmental organizations in a
unique world partnership: over 980 members in all, spread across some 140
countries. IUCN's mission is "To influence, encourage and assist societies
throughout the world to conserve the integrity and diversity of nature and to
ensure that any use of natural resources is equitable and ecologically
sustainable". As a Union, IUCN seeks to influence, encourage and assist
societies throughout the world to conserve the integrity and diversity of
nature and to ensure that any use of natural resources is equitable and
ecologically sustainable. A central secretariat coordinates the IUCN Programme
and serves the Union membership, representing their views on the world stage
and providing them with the strategies, services, scientific knowledge and
technical support they need to achieve their goals. The
World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) mission is "to promote the
establishment and effective management of a world-wide representative network
of terrestrial and marine protected areas, as an integral contribution to the
IUCN mission." |

Worldwatch Institute
-
Founded by Lester Brown in 1974, the Worldwatch Institute offers a
unique blend of interdisciplinary research, global focus, and accessible
writing that has made it a leading source of information on the interactions
among key environmental, social, and economic trends. Their work revolves
around the transition to an environmentally sustainable and socially just
society—and how to achieve it. The credibility and accessibility of
Worldwatch research has made their publications popular among a
cross-section of society, from government and business decisionmakers to the
media, students, and the general public. Since the first
Worldwatch Paper was published in 1975, the Institute has broadened
discussion of environmental and social issues by analyzing them from a
global and interdisciplinary perspective. Building a world where we meet
our own needs without denying future generations a healthy society is not
impossible, but the challenge is to mobilize governments, businesses, and
civil society to construct economies that are healthy for both people and
the planet, reports State
of the World 2003. According to the 20th anniversary edition of the
Worldwatch Institute’s award-winning report, scaling up recent successes in
curbing infection, increasing the income of the poor, and advancing the use
of renewable energy, among others, would soon put the world’s economy on a
more sustainable path

African Wildlife Foundation
(AWF) - For more than 40 years, the African Wildlife Foundation (AWF)
has focused exclusively on the continent of Africa. Through these years AWF
has played a major role in ensuring the continued existence of some of
Africa's most rare and treasured species such as the
elephant, the
mountain gorilla,
rhinoceros and
cheetah. AWF has performed
extensive scientific research and feasibility studies to select and prioritize
Africa's most viable conservation landscapes. In these vast conservation
landscapes, called Heartlands, which frequently cross national boundaries, AWF
works with local partners to undertake concrete activities that protect more
land for conservation while mitigating threats to these valuable resources.
Seven Heartlands have been initially identified:
Four Corners (Zambia,
Zimbabwe, Botswana and Namibia);
Kilimanjaro (Kenya
and Tanzania); Limpopo
(Mozambique, South Africa and Zimbabwe);
Maasai Steppe
(Tanzania); Samburu
(Kenya); Virunga (Uganda,
Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo); and
Zambezi (Zimbabwe, Zambia
and Mozambique).. |
GRAIN - Genetic Resources Action International

The BIOTRADE Initiative - UNCTAD launched the BIOTRADE Initiative in
1996 during the third Conference of the Parties (COP3) of the Convention on
Biological Diversity (CBD). Its mission is to stimulate trade and investment
in biological resources to further sustainable development in line with the
three objectives of the CBD. The Convention's objectives are the
conservation of biological diversity; sustainable use of its components; and
fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising from the utilization of
genetic resources. Mandate: BIOTRADE responds to the Plan of Action of
UNCTAD, and the trade related aspects of CBD Art. 10 on "Sustainable use of
components of biological diversity" and Art. 11 on "Incentive measures". It
also responds to the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD), in
particular §66 (l) (fifth session), which stresses the urgent need "to
provide incentive measures at national, regional and international levels to
promote the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity, by
enhancing developing countries' capabilities to compete in the emerging
market for biological resources, while improving the functioning of this
market". The Initiative has established a number of partnerships with
national and regional organizations with the aim of setting up programmes
that enhance the capability of developing countries to produce value-added
products and services derived from biodiversity, for both domestic and
international markets. These partner organizations, in turn, have their
networks of local organizations working in the field, which allows them to
address all aspects of the value chain of natural products in a
cost-efficient manner. The Implementation of the Initiative is based on an
integrated approach comprising three complementary and mutually reinforcing
components:
Country and regional programmes;
·
Policy development and
trade facilitation;
Internet services. |

BDF has more recently changed its focus to wildlife habitat and species
protection. BDF has current assets of approximately US$40 million and annually
distributes over US$1.5 million in grants ranging from US$1,000 to US$250,000.
Occasionally capital grants are given for land purchases and endowments. BDF
funding is dedicated to international programs primarily in developing
countries. Funds support anti-poaching efforts and small hands-on
organizations with low overheads and cutting-edge conservation programs. These
programs are dedicated to protecting some of the world's most important
flagship species and their habitats and ecosystems. BDF will consider
applications for support of the conservation and habitat protection of the
following animals: bears, elephants, exotic birds, great apes, large cats,
marine mammals, marine turtles, rhinos, and sharks. BDF prefers to
support organizations that focus on fieldwork and avoid heavy administrative
costs. In exceptional circumstances, BDF will consider emergency funding. |

project support lives on through a collection of publications now
available through BSP and the BSP Web site. Please note that this
BCN Web site is no longer being updated.
The Biodiversity Support Program
BSP was operated from 1989-2001 as a consortium of
World
Wildlife Fund (WWF),
The Nature
Conservancy (TNC), and
World Resources
Institute (WRI) and was funded by the
United
States Agency for International Development (USAID). BSP's mission
was to promote conservation of the world's biological diversity
believing that a healthy and secure living resource base is essential to
meet the needs and aspirations of future generations. BSP carried out
its mission by supporting projects that combined conservation with
social and economic development. |
